What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique that helps repair the effects of the sun and aging. The process actually stimulates the production of new skin cells and collagen, which help to keep your skin healthy, clearer and younger-looking. Microdermabrasion can remove fine lines, crow's feet, age spots, discoloration and acne scars. It can also be beneficial for those who suffer from repeat acne breakouts. The treatment is administered to the face and neck, and requires repeat treatments for lasting effects.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure, requiring no downtime.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Your Thunder Bay Laser Technician will use a device similar to a mini-sandblaster to spray tiny aluminum oxide crystals across your skin. This gentle abrasion helps loosen the dead, outer layer of the skin, while the suction process of the device removes the dead skin.
While removing your dead skin, Microdermabrasion also promotes new cell production and collagen production in the basal layer of the dermis. The process will thoroughly clean out your pores and decrease the likeliness of future acne breakouts.
The result is clear, polished, even-textured and younger-looking skin. For best results, anywhere from 5-12 sessions are beneficial. In between treatments, please follow a strict skin care regimen to further enhance the effects of the Microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion can be combined with a medical peel for more dramatic results.

Am I a Candidate?
If you suffer from sun-damaged skin, mild to moderate lines and wrinkles, acne, acne scars, or uneven skin texture, Microdermabrasion can help.
Microdermabrasion is usually recommended to men and women with:
- a dull skin texture
- an oily skin texture
- a leathery skin texture
- enlarged pores
- clogged pores (acne)
- fine lines
- mild acne scarring
- mild pigment irregularities
- sun damage
- a sensitivity to chemical procedures
You are NOT a candidate for Microdermabrasion if you suffer from:
- deep scars
- deep wrinkles
- hypo- or hyper-pigmentation
- keloid scarring in your family
- undiagnosed lesions
- warts
- weeping acne
- rosacea
- unstable diabetes
- auto-immune disorders

How Long Does Treatment Take?
Each treatment takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the amount of skin to be treated. 5-12 sessions spaced every 2-3 weeks are recommended for optimum results.
Following treatment, you may go back to work or resume any normal daily activities.

Does It Hurt?
No, the Microdermabrasion treatment is not painful. It may cause a slight stinging sensation during application, but is certainly not painful.

What Are the Side Effects?
Side effects usually consist of a hot or mild burning sensation, similar to a sunburn. Your skin may appear slightly pink for the first 24 hours after treatment. Your skin will feel dry and may peel, which is to be expected as this is part of the process to new and rejuvenated skin. Using a high quality moisturizer each day after treatment is highly recommended to ensure the effects of your treatment last longer. Swelling is a very rare side effect, which dissipates after a few days.

What Results Should I Expect and For How Long?
You will see immediate results following your treatment. Primarily, your skin will feel clean and smooth. Your skin tone and texture will also improve significantly, most especially after several treatments.
How long your results will last will depend entirely on your skin tone. If you currently have good skin tone, then the results of Microdermabrasion will be longer lasting. 5-12 sessions spaced every 2-3 weeks are recommended for optimum results. Follow-up sessions and a good skin regimen will further enhance the effects.
Your Thunder Bay Laser Clinic Technician will be able to help assess the amount of time required between sessions based on your skin tone and the results of your first treatment.
