What Is a Medical Peel?

A Medical Peel is a treatment that will help rejuvenate your skin.

Each day, literally thousands of your skin cells die and fall off. They are then replaced by new cells. However, as we get older, this process slows down, so dark skin blotches or sun damaged skin is difficult to shed. The purpose of the Medical Peel is to help create an even, controlled shedding of multiple layers of damaged skin cells.

Medical Peels are typically applied to the face, neck, chest or hands.

Some of the benefits of a medical peel include:

  • skin clarity
  • reduced pore size
  • increased skin elasticity
  • reduction of fine lines
  • skin cancer prevention
  • reduction in acne scarring
  • evening out of skin tone
  • improved skin texture
  • improved acne
  • elimination of age spots
  • diminished rosacea
  • balanced menopausal skin

How Does a Medical Peel Work?

Your Thunder Bay Laser Clinic Technician will apply a peeling agent to your skin. The very top layer of your cells will dry up, and peel off over the course of several days. This will ultimately expose a new layer with more even tone and texture.

Your Technician will custom design a program to suit your specific skin type and needs. She will choose from a variety of natural fruit acids in varying strengths that will have the most effect on your skin.

The Medical Peel will also stimulate the growth of new cells, which will tighten your skin to decrease wrinkling.

Am I a Candidate?

The majority of adults and adolescents, regardless of skin colour, are candidates for a medical peel. Whether you suffer from sun damage, discoloured skin, acne, freckling, blotchiness, hypersensitivity, or hormones, we can custom design a program that will work for you.

Please schedule a complimentary consultation with the Thunder Bay Laser Clinic to determine if a Medical Peel is right for you.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Treatment only takes about 30 minutes. Some will return to work and normal activities immediately following treatment. However, there is the chance that your skin will look dramatically sunburned. Some patients prefer to take 5-7 days to heal.

Does It Hurt?

No, a Medical Peel is not painful. You may feel a mild tingling sensation while the glycolic acid is applied to the skin. Some patients report an itchy sensation. Once treatment is complete, your skin will feel refreshed and smooth.

What Are the Side Effects?

Most Medical Peels have minimal side effects. The two main side effects are irritation and sun sensitivity, which include the following symptoms: redness, burning, itching, pain, and possibly scarring. These side effects usually subside within a few hours to a few days, depending upon the patient's skin condition and individual healing process.

What Results Should I Expect and For How Long?

Medical Peels can diminish fine lines and mild to moderate wrinkles, as well as other skin imperfections. Medical Peels are not recommended for deep lines and wrinkles, as a Laser treatment will offer better results. One peel can significantly improve your skin's appearance, although you may require a few follow-up treatments for best results.
