What is IPL Pulsed Light Skin RenewalIPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, which can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including sun-related skin conditions, such as freckles, and brown spots. IPL treatment can be applied to many areas of the body, but is primarily applied to the neck, chest, hands and face.
At the Thunder Bay Laser Clinic, we use elos for superior pulsed light skin renewal. Skin renewal using elos will safely treat many common skin problems, such as fine lines, rosacea, spider veins, sun damaged skin, age spots and uneven texture and tone. Many of these skin problems can cause you to look older than your age. With this treatment, light is delivered to the skin's surface using light pulses helping to improve the skin's tone and texture. Results are more vibrant and glowing skin.
IPL is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure which is regarded as very safe and effective.
How Does IPL Pulsed Light Skin Renewal Work
Prior to IPL being administered, a cold gel is applied to the areas of skin to be treated. Patients must wear protective eyewear. Your Thunder Bay Laser Clinic Technician will then apply the smooth surface of the IPL handpiece to your skin. Light will be transferred in pulses.
The Renewal treatment involves the removal of the damaged outer layers of skin using a carbon dioxide laser. Several layers of damaged cells will be removed displaying a new and fresh, more even-textured layer of skin. Our specialized elos Pulsed Light can target specific problem areas, vaporizing the outer layers of skin to a precise depth. Collagen production is stimulated through this process, which helps firm and tighten the skin.
At times, this treatment is combined with a facelift or eyelid surgery for optimum results. A Thunder Bay Laser Clinic Practitioner will help determine the right skin renewal treatment plan for you.

How Long Does Treatment Take
This procedure usually takes as little as 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of treatment areas. Typical sessions usually last 10-15 minutes. This procedure requires no downtime, so you may return to your regular activities immediately following treatment. With several treatments, excellent long-term results can be maintained.
Does It Hurt
This procedure is considered very mild. You will experience some mild sensations as the pulses of light are passed over your skin, like a slight snapping or tingling.
What Are the Side Effects
Directly following your treatment, your skin may feel swollen , numb and have a slight pink hue. You may experience mild to significant swelling the night and morning following treatment. Swelling may be reduced by sleeping with your head elevated. Your side effects can vary depending on the aggressiveness of your session. With a more aggressive treatment, your skin may remain with a "sunburned' look anywhere from one week to 3 months. You may also develop a brown, freckled appearance, similar to coffee grinds. This typically occurs in areas of brown pigmentation. This pigmentation or any redness can last up to a week. You should avoid the sun as much as possible.
Some less likely side effects include pigmentary changes, scars and infection. Some patients report a slight burning sensation which typically lasts a few short hours. Temporary bruising is unlikely, but has occurred in some situations.
What Results Should I Expect and For How Long
You will notice some results shortly after treatment, however, depending on the severity of your skin problems, chances are you may require several treatments. Each individual's skin is very different in colour, tone and damage, so the number of treatments required can vary. Improvement is gradual, but after a series of approximately 5 treatments over a 15 week period, dramatic effects can be noticed. Results from a series of treatments can last for several years or longer, depending on your future amount of sun exposure. After receiving 5 treatments, general maintenance treatments may be performed from time to time.
